A History of Immaculate Heart of Mary School

history1The parish was founded by Bishop Francis Hyland, first bishop of Atlanta, in 1956. In an effort to provide an excellent Catholic education for this parish, Monsignor Cornelius Maloney, the first IHM pastor, founded a parish school.  The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart were asked to staff the school and Sister Gerald Ann Higgins was named the first principal.

When the school opened its doors in August 1958, it welcomed 238 students in grades 1 through 7. An 8thgrade was added the following year.  By 1969 the growth of the school called for the construction of a new wing, the Middle School annex, with additional classrooms, a library and a gym. The Kindergarten program was introduced the same year.  Two years later, in 1971, IHM School was fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS.)

The rapid growth of the parish and school demanded the expansion and modernization of the IHM campus.  The 1990s was a decade of new construction for the school and refurbishing for the church. Renovations in 1991 included a new school library and administrative offices.

In 2007 all classrooms were equipped with overhead projector systems. In 2008 IHM received the second National PTA Award as a Parent Involvement School of Excellence. In 2008-2009 the church and the school celebrated their 50th anniversary and a new sanctuary was dedicated in January of 2009. That same year the school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. IHM was one of 50 private schools in the nation to receive this award.

Today, IHM School continues to be a ministry of the church. Its students are taught religious values integrated into a quality academic curriculum in a structured atmosphere. Most recently, the school contributed to the building campaign of the parish by donating a statue entitled “Mary, Seat of Wisdom.” The statue depicts the Blessed Mother and the Child Jesus, ever present at IHM.
