Welcome! I’m Mrs. Sandy
Wilson, the librarian of
Immaculate Heart of Mary
School’s Media Center.
I believe the Library
Media Center is the
focal point of our
school through which
integrated and
multi-disciplinary
learning takes place.
It provides many
resources both print and
non-print. The Media
Center is an extension
of your child’s
classroom where they can
get information on many
subjects or borrow
interesting books to
read.
I am blessed to have two
wonderful part-time
assistants (Mrs. Ileana
Romero and Mrs. Ashleigh
Hally) and many generous
parents who volunteer their
time in the media center.
Our fully automated media
center is an open library
with each class having a
scheduled class time during
the week. Kindergarten
through grade 5 visits the
library for 1 hour while
grades 6 through 8 have a
35-minute time slot. The
library program includes
instruction in the use of
library resources, library
skills, including
on-line research tools,
appreciation of literature,
book talks, library skills
games,
Accelerated Reader
testing and actual practice
in individual
library/research skills. In
addition to a scheduled
library class, Middle School
students will also come to
the library for a 35-minute
Study Skills class. These
classes will include
instruction on SSAT prep,
note taking, test taking
skills, etc.
The library is furnished
with more than 32,000 books,
periodicals, and
audio-visual materials, with
16 computers for student
use. The computers have
access to Internet and
several on-line research
tools, including
encyclopedia and magazine
indexes. In addition, the
children have access to two
printers and a scanner.
The Library Media Center
also offers many programs to
enhance your child’s reading
skills, including
Accelerated Reader and the
Georgia Book Award Programs.
The library sponsors
Battle of the Books, a
Birthday Book Program,
Book Fairs, Book Clubs,
reading contests and
programs, Family Reading
Night, and a Summer Reading
Program.
We have a Spanish section
which includes both books
and video cassettes, as well
as a Parent Corner with
books geared towards
spiritual enrichment as well
as books on child rearing.
As you can see the Library
Media Center has much to
offer, so please come in
whenever you wish, though
please be respectful of
classes that might be in
session. We do encourage
parents to take advantage of
our library collection and
look forward to seeing you
often.
